Regions of Provenance in Hungary and Nomenclature
The forest land in Hungary is divided up into Forest Regions numbered in the 10’s, 20’s etc to 93. These are based upon geomorphology and forest types and are numbered acccordingly. The important forest species in Hungary fit into one of five different groupings of Forest Regions. For Quercus robur, Quercus rubra and Juglans nigra there are five completely distinct Regions of Provenance 1 to 5. For Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Fraxinus excelsior and Quercus cerris there are six regions 1 to 6, although region 6 comprises the whole of the Great Plain Area plus the low lying area in the north-west beside the Austrian and Slovak border. Carpinus betulus, Prunus avium, Acer pseudoplatanus, Tilia cordata and T. platyphyllos have four regions of provenance 1 to 4, although region 4, for these species also comprises the Great Plain area and the area near the Austrian and Slovak borders. For Populus nigra, Populus alba, Salix alba, Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus angustifolia there are four distinct regions of provenance 1 to 4 and for all conifers, Abies alba, Larix deciduas, L kaempferi, Picea abies, Pinus nigra, Pinus strobes Pseudotsuga menziesii and Picea sitchensis there are four different separate regions.
The Suppliers document has a space for the name of the source of the propagating material and National Register Code as well as for the Master certificate number. From the National Register Code the exact source of the material can be found out.
